TELEKOM MALAYSIA GROUP LENDS A HELPING HAND REGIONALLY

Telekom Malaysia Group, which has sizeable presence in the region today contributed a total donation of RM1.0 juta to lend a helping hand to the tsunami victims in Malaysia and the region.
Dato Abdul Wahid Omar, Group Chief Executive Officer, Telekom Malaysia Berhad commented: "Our Chairman who is currently out of the country, other Board members, management and staff of Telekom Malaysia would like to extend our condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy. We are deeply saddened by the loss and we join other Malaysians in urging you to be strong in this time of bereavement."
Telekom Malaysia and its Group companies, Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad and TM Net Sdn Bhd joined efforts to contribute RM500,000.00 in total to the tsunami disaster relief funds organised by the NSTP Group, The Star-MRCS-Mercy and Kumpulan Utusan. The NST, BH, TV3 and 8TV Malaysian Tsunami Disaster Fund received RM250,000, while The Star Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Fund in association with the Malaysian Red Crescent Society and Mercy Malaysia was given RM150,000 and Tabung Bencana Tsunami Utusan, RM100,000.
In addition, Telekom Malaysia through its subsidiary, TM International Sdn. Bhd., is also contributing about RM500,000 in total to the tsunami disaster relief funds in Sri Lanka and Indonesia. TM International Sdn. Bhd.'s wholly-owned subsidiary, MTN Networks Limited is the number one mobile operator in Sri Lanka whilst Telekom Malaysia has recently announced its acquisition of 27.3 per cent stake in PT Excelcomindo of Indonesia.
Dato Abdul Wahid added, "We are humbled to be of assistance to our local authorities and the countries where we have our presence particularly in Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The authorities would need immediate funds to look into rescue operations, setting-up of health teams to monitor food and water-borne diseases, medical supplies, restoration work etc. It is only right for us to come forward and help in this time of need."
"On our part, we are monitoring and making sure that the communication links in and to the disaster areas is restored and functioning. This is crucial to the post disaster relief operations and can assist in monitoring and providing early warning advice. Telekom Malaysia stands ready to be of assistance in any way possible."
