TELEKOM MALAYSIA AIMS TO BECOME A WORLD CLASS TELCO

Kuala Lumpur, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 - With priorities and strategies soundly in place, Telekom Malaysia is poised to position itself as a world-class telecommunications company and the preferred customer choice.

Telekom Malaysia is one of the largest listed companies on Bursa Malaysia with an approximate RM37 billion market capitalisation coupled with a 100% digital network infrastructure and a global presence with operations in 7 countries.

According to Telekom Malaysia's Group Chief Executive Officer, Dato' Abdul Wahid Omar, Telekom Malaysia is focusing on five priorities moving forward on the Group's strategies and future direction :

Grow cash flows and increase asset utilisation

With continued focus on growing cash flows and increasing asset utilisation to ensure a stable income stream from the fixed line business, Telekom Malaysia has begun introducing various new products targeted specifically for its 4.5 million fixed line residential and business customers. For example, feature loaded telephones that enable fixed SMS have been to boost fixed line usage.

The recent restructuring of TM Telco into TM Wholesale and TM Retail as Strategic Business Units (SBUs) specifically addresses the network utilisation issue. In essence, TM Wholesale is responsible for the provisioning of infrastructure access and network capacities to all licensed telecommunication operators while TM Retail is focusing on enhanced service and product delivery to end business and residential consumers.

Capitalise on sustainable growth in cellular

With the completion of the network integration by October, the Company will aggressively focus its efforts on capturing more market share and managing its distribution channels effectively as well as introducing new innovative products and services. The Company is also focusing on actively promoting CIBS or Celcom Integrated Business Solutions. As of June 2004, Celcom recorded a customer base of 4.67 million customers with a market share of 38.6 percent.

Focus on data, broadband and value added services

In achieving the target set in the National Broadband Plan by the Government, Telekom Malaysia will expedite the roll-out of broadband using both fixed and wireless access. The Company will also increase awareness of broadband by educating the masses on the various uses of broadband to further accelerate broadband penetration.

Develop a customer and service driven culture

Telekom Malaysia aims to be more customer focused in all markets that it serves and will provide timely and efficient customer service at all levels. Towards this end, the Company will benchmark against the best in the region to improve customer satisfaction. The Company will embark on a rebranding exercise soon which will not only result in cosmetic changes but translate into real changes for improvement in customer services across all customer contact points of the Company. For example, the relocation of Kedai Telekom to more strategic locations and retraining of Kedai staff, emphasising on a performance driven culture, in line with becoming more customer centric are in the pipeline.

Prudent international expansion

In the international front, the Company will continue its strategy of investing in high growth markets in the Asian region with a focus on the cellular sector. Telekom Malaysia is pleased with the success achieved in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. With a customer base of more than 1 million customers, MTN Networks Limited of Sri Lanka, has a market share of 53 per cent as of June 2004 while TM International Bangladesh, as the second largest cellular operator in Bangladesh, recorded a substantial increase in its subscriber base to 704,000 for the second quarter of this year.

Dato' Abdul Wahid said, "The broad framework for the Group's business approach will be guided by three key areas These areas include becoming a customer centric organisation, practising prudent financial management as well as working towards achieving a world class Telco in the long-term by delivering value to all its stakeholders."

He added, "Providing customer satisfaction will be the cornerstone of Telekom Malaysia's business approach. In addition, there will be continued focus on reducing operating costs across the Group which will eventually result in systematic improvements in operating cash flows and profit levels. Telekom Malaysia aims to be a world class Telco and the preferred customer choice in all markets it serves. Telekom Malaysia will strive to achieve world class benchmarks is customer service and delivery., network infrastructure as well as the delivery of innovative communications solutions to meet the growing sophisticated demands of its residential and business customers."
